2015 was 4 Girls 4 Harps' 15th anniversary as a quartet. To celebrate, we commissioned a new work - Tetra - by four British female composers: Nicola LeFanu, Alissa Firsova, Savourna Stevenson and Ayanna Witter-Johnson.
Tetra is a four movement piece by four female composers performed on four harps by four female harpists. Each movement takes as its musical base, the opening motif from Henriette Renié's solo harp piece Légende. In addition, each movement is inspired by a famous woman from history, chosen from suggestions submitted by our audience and fans.
Due to the unique nature of the ensemble, we have been creating and commissioning new music since we formed in 2001. To date, we have been responsible for the creation of nine original works for harp quartet and countless other arrangements of well-known classical pieces. We were delighted that the concept behind Tetra attracted large and diverse audiences, and led to performances and discussion on BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme and BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour programme.
This commission would not have been possible without the financial support of PRS for Music Foundation’s Women Make Music programme, the Ambache Charitable Trust and the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. We are incredibly grateful for their support: without organisations such as these, the development of new music and creative projects would be almost non-existant, and the world would be far poorer as a result.
